POETRY
First Fig
By Edna St. Vincent Millay
My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night;
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—
It gives a lovely light!
MUSIC
My mother was a great music lover. Besides being an accomplished violinist and teacher of music, she loved music, particularly symphonic music. Music was playing in our home all the time—classical, jazz, show tunes, and the American songbook. She had a collection of 78 RPM records that sits in our garage.
My mother did not have much love for modern pop or rock music. That said, she noted that a few groups were pretty accomplished musically. The ones I remember were Steely Dan and Chicago. Here are some loving tributes. The first is Steely Dan in 2000 (after 20 years without an album) on The Today Show’s summer concert series. It’s pure joy performed on the plaza in front of Rockefeller Center, starting with “Peg”
The other group is the modern version of the “big band” sound of Chicago. Here is the gang performing “Call on Me” live, just a few years ago:
Have a great weekend,
