#96 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Thursday July 22)
Good morning!
UNFORTUNATE NAMES
There were many recollections of unfortunate names. Here are the best, with attribution and commentary:
Robert Ralston
Baseball player Roughfend Odor
Howard Kroll
Jewell Slutsky. Howard claims we’re related because we both have cousins with this last name; I maintain proof we’re related is the vast (useless) storehouse of trivia we each possess…
Ronny Bensimon
A kid at my elementary school, Rusty Pipes.
And my favorites, a couple of headstones near where my father is buried, Harry Aenus and Minnie Aenus.
Chris Maling (thank you, Chris, for showing off your adolescent bullying of the unfortunate)
Richard “Dick” Hertz
Michael “Mike” Hunt
Richard Dick (aka as Dick Dick or Dick Squared or Mr. Dick or Double D)
Robert Blowgenhuer (aka Rob Blowjobandhour)
Bill Johnson
For the unfortunate name list, a double whammy: Mona Groener. Finally marries. New name: Mona Weiner.
Frank Maas
Tina Wiener – maybe she should have kept her birth name.
Bradley Mindlin
I grew up with a Diane Slutsky. From the San Fernando Valley.
Peter Bain:
Actual names of people I have known (with genuine wonder at what the parents were thinking):
Richard Head (yup…)
Mary Christmas
Dom Perignon Champagne
Marc Rosenbach (in recounting his juvenile delinquency with his older brother):
Another one of those unfortunate Eastern European names was Lipschitz. When we were kids, my brother and I would get out the white pages and call the local Lipschitzes. When they confirmed their last name, we’d proudly and loudly say, “Well if your lip shits, my ass whistles.” Afterwards, we’d hang up, laugh really hard, then call another. A not so proud memory. Alan, we were awful.
REMEMBERING CARTOON CHARACTERS OUTSIDE OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE
As evidence that I must have watched more TV than I remember, I recall silly superheroes that entertained me. You can’t argue that these weren’t clever:
Underdog (voiced by Wally Cox), with girlfriend Sweet Polly Purebred
Mighty Mouse
Super Chicken
Mr. Peabody and Sherman (remember Mr. Peabody’s “way back” machine that took him to adventures in the past? A precursor to Quantum Leap? Mr. Peabody was voiced by the same Bill Scott who voiced Super Chicken!
Crusader Rabbit
Astro Boy
Gigantor (“Gigantor the space-age robot, he’s at your command. Gigantor the space-age robot, his power is in your hand…”)
And how can one forget the Super Chicken theme song?:
When you find yourself in danger,
When you're threatened by a stranger,
When it looks like you will take a lickin', (puk, puk, puk, puk)
There is someone waiting,
Who will hurry up and rescue you,
Just C-a-a-a-l-l-l for Super Chicken! (puk ack!)
Fred, if you’re afraid you’ll have to overlook it,
Because you knew the job was dangerous when you took it (puk, ack!)
Have an immature day,
Glenn
