#902 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Wednesday April 17)
Good morning,
In the midst of all the craziness of the past few weeks, I thought today to provide three distractions—one humorous, one deep, and one clever. The first is a great baseball anecdote. The other is a poem of loss and the presence that persists. The final one is a clever categorization of popular tunes.
GREAT BASEBALL STORIES—NORM CASH EDITION
Norm Cash, a baseball player of my childhood (one of the Al Kaline era Tigers) was a near-great player and a great prankster. On July 15, 1973, with Nolan Ryan pitched a no-hitter for the (then) California Angels, here’s a story from teammate Jim Northrup:
“In his last at-bat, Norm walked up to the plate with a table leg from the locker room. The plate umpire, Ron Luciano, says, `You can’t use that up here.’ Cash says, `Why not, I won’t hit him anyway.’ He then gets a bat, strikes out on three pitches, and walking away he says to Luciano, `See, I told ya.'”
