Good morning,
Today, a little April foolishness…
QUOTATIONS FROM CASEY STENGEL
It’s baseball season, so time for a few great words of brilliance…this time from Casey Stengel, who managed the Mantle Yankees and the hapless 1964 Mets…
“The secret of managing is keeping the guys who hate you away from the guys who are undecided.” --Casey Stengel
“Been in this game one-hundred years, but I see new ways to lose ‘em I never knew existed before.” –Casey Stengel
“Son, we’d like to keep you around this season, but we’re going to try to win a pennant.” –Casey Stengel
APRIL FOOLS MUSIC
At the risk of violating my self-imposed rule of sharing music and poetry only at the end of the week, it’s April Fools Day. In honor of this day, some of my favorite “foolish music.” Here is the genius of Tom Lehrer, whose timely tunes are far from foolish but are thoughtful social commentary:
“Werner von Braun”:
“Poisoning Pigeons in the Park:”
“National Brotherhood Week”:
APRIL FOOLS ORIGIN?
There are a lot of theories about the origin of April Fools Day, none of which totally rings true. But this one, from History.com, seems the most plausible:
“Some historians speculate that April Fools' Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar, the new year began with the spring equinox, around April 1.”
There seems some logic to the “prank” that April 1st still was the start of the year, when January 1st, in fact, was the new start of the year.
FAVORITE PRANKS
Two of my favorite pranks from recent history are:
In 1985, George Plimpton wrote an article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch, who could throw a fastball over 168 miles per hour.
In 1992, NPR reported President Nixon announcing he was running for president again… Needless to say, totally false.
Have a great day and don’t get tricked!
Glenn
I cant forget an April 1st of 2005 When a friend of mine lied to me that there was no school that day and poor me i missed an exam on top of serious punishments by my parents.. Though Now days People have become saints! No more lies.
