#84 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Saturday July 10)
Good morning!
DAYS OF THE WEEK SONGS
A few more days of the week songs from Mark DiMaria, Russ Chittenden, my cousin Chris, Patty Lambert and others:
Friday on My Mind, the Easybeats:
Sunday Will Never Be the Same, Spanky and Our Gang, with great videos of the 60s:
. How could I have left this out?
Sunday Morning, The Velvet Underground, Nico:
And several folks have pointed out Sunday Morning Coming Down, by Kris Kristofferson (or as Russ Chittenden says, “The Great. Great. Kris Kristofferson”):
MORE ON DAYS
Tony Canzonneri suggests Splish Splash (I was taking a bath), which is about Saturday, though the day is not mentioned in the title.
Paul Brindley notes that, “You have listed some good Days of the Week music, including one of my favorites in Come Monday. And while not about a specific day of the week, Bloody Mary Morning by Willie Nelson (the 1974 Phases and Stages version) can be about any day,but seems appropriate for a Saturday or Sunday (most of the time…). And like many of my favorites, it mentions LA (I am also prone to favor songs that mention Texas…). Paul is a rabid Longhorn fan…
For Willie fans, there is a fun podcast called One by Willie and the S2 E8 episode is about Bloody Mary Morning with the commentary by Rodney Crowell.
And from David Lash, commenting on being the fossil he is: Making me feel old, the clip of U2 proves I have been a fan for forty (!) years, I didn’t need that! And Bono had a bad haircut, The Edge not only was not wearing a knit hat but had a good haircut and Adam Clayton had frosted tips. Help!!
Paul Kanin can’t figure out the rules, looking to theatre for Sunday in the Park with George and cinema for Saturday Night Fever.
LIVE THEATRE!
The 2021-22 Ahmanson season has been announced. Here are the plays, followed by my comments (in parentheses) and then Emma Lutz’s:
Christmas Carol (really?) the world needs a new holiday show!!
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (no idea; although well received in London) never heard of it; will look it up
The Lehman Trilogy (supposed to be extraordinary, though not a musical) excited!
Hadestown (I really want to see) I better start listening now…
Dear Evan Hansen (enough already…) I did not enjoy this piece—either the story or the screaming style of singing
The Prom (I’ve read mixed reviews but I want to see it) my parents’ friends were producers on the show; it’s extremely fun and silly and IMHO has better messages than Dear Evan for Gen Z
Oklahoma! (well-regarded new production, though I’m not sure how it can be any newer/darker…I think Curly doesn’t look so great in this one) I played Laurey my senior year of college—favorite role I ever sang; I didn’t see the new production but people seemed to either love or hate it, which means it must be interesting!!
Get your tickets now! Live theatre is coming back to LA and it needs our support!
Best,
Glenn
