#784 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Tuesday October 31)
Happy Halloween,
I love holidays. When I was a kid, and later when I was the father of young kids, there was no holiday as anticipated as Halloween. After all, what could be better than donning a costume and wandering about the neighborhood picking up candy from neighbors?
These days, Halloween isn’t nearly the same. I still love the displays at people’s homes—more and more elaborate each year. Some are sophisticated enough to give Disney’s Haunted Mansion a run for their money.
As for costumes, I’ve never been a costume party guy. When I can, I decline the opportunity to dress up or I say, “I’m going as a middle-aged Jewish lawyer.” Given my advancing years, that might be a reach now…
NO PATIENCE FOR HORROR
As many genres of entertainment as I like, horror films are not among them. Why watch a movie solely designed to show senseless violence and instill fear? You can keep Friday the 13th and Chucky. Give me a great plot, character development, and message. More on movies later…
NICKNAMES AND BASEBALL
In the meantime, on baseball nicknames, Randy Boggan notes John “Blue Moon” Odom and Jim “Catfish” Hunter from the 1970s Oakland A’s
Meanwhile, Paul Kanin offers up the following:
“Wizard of Oz”- Ozzie Smith
“Doc”-Roberts
“Junior” -Gilliam
“Moose”- Skowren or Moustakas
“Iron Man”- Mike Marshall
And for those who feel nostalgic (or just want to smile), here is 40-year-old Ozzie Smith doing his famous flip on opening day: Ozzie Smith Flip
Have a great day,
Glenn
