Good morning,
With the 2024 election primary and caucus season having begun, I have a deal for my Republican friends.
HERE’S THE CONTEXT
Republicans are lining up to explain who they “must” vote for the Republican nominee because the “Biden-Harris Administration is so corrupt and incompetent” They point to several primary justifications for the necessity of voting out this administration:
Biden is too old and says too many crazy things.
The “Biden crime family” has taken bribes from foreign governments, in exchange for favorable treatment by the then-Obama administration and now the Biden administration.
Biden bungled the Afghanistan pull-out and is bungling the border.
Biden is controlled by a messianic woke-culture attempt to (a) redefine genders, (b) allow for late-term abortions without limit, (c) restrict gun ownership, and (d) teach kids bad stuff in school.
On each of these points:
Trump is hardly less crazy than anyone in public life—in fact he is more so. His inflammatory language prompted the rioting on January 6th. His language of hate and grievance has cheapened our civic and political discourse. His name calling is appalling. He has repeatedly been unable to distinguish between Nikki Haley and Nancy Pelosi and is now claiming Haley isn’t really American (by virtue of her name and ethnicity).
Trump never effectively addressed immigration. And while the border situation is still in need of resolution, there are more deportations under Biden than under any prior administration. Further, Trump failed to address Afghanistan (other than saying we’re going to leave by a date certain), a new Iran treaty (other than tearing up the old one), resetting relations with China, Russia, or North Korea (other than leaving the Trans-Pacific Partnership and enabling Chinese military expansion and Russian adventurism in Eastern Europe), his lack of a health care plan (other than the demand to get rid of the ACA without anything in its stead), and on and on weren’t enough. As to immigration and the border, he now is demanding that Republican legislators vote against a bipartisan compromise. His opposition to the compromise isn’t because it isn’t good, nor because it fails to incorporate many of the Republicans’ demands. He doesn’t want it to become law because there can’t be any legislative victories, even if good for America, that could be seen as benefiting President Biden.
Regarding the claims of a “crime family,” we have yet to see anything particularly incriminating coming from the most famous laptop in America. And no evidence has yet been shown that Joe Biden took money from foreign governments in a “pay-to-play” scheme—just claims. The Afghanistan pull-out was not a good look, to be sure, but the pull-out itself was making good on Mr. Trump’s repeated vows to leave Afghanistan (a promise he never fulfilled). As to the woke culture, let’s remember that the liberal left is none too happy with Mr. Biden, for not going far enough.
HERE’S THE DEAL
But here’s the promise I will make to my Republican friends. If it turns out that there is definitive evidence of Joe Biden accepting bribes from foreign governments and I have an alternative to Donald Trump, I will pursue that alternative.
Now, how about you? If no definitive evidence about Joe Biden criminal behavior emerges, and given what we know about the dangers of Trump, including the dangers many of you have acknowledged to me in conversation, will you vote against the dangerous Mr. Trump? After all, while his criminal culpability has yet to be established in a court of law, the facts of his many dubious acts and statements are well documented.
If you are unwilling to vote against Mr. Trump, why not? Is American democracy of so little importance to you? Are lower capital gains rates really worth trading away our legal system? Is restricting American history in schools to eliminate things that make kids feel uncomfortable (like slavery) worth leaving NATO and abandoning our leadership on the world stage? Where is the red line, beyond which you could no longer support for Mr. Trump? And hasn’t that red line already been passed? Is there EVER a state of facts that would cause you to vote for Joe Biden or a similar relative moderate against Mr. Trump?
Have a great day,
Glenn
