#741 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Friday September 1)
Good morning,
MUSIC
Friends visited El Paso the other day. Besides the trivia that El Paso is closer to San Diego than it is to Houston, it is the town memorialized in Marty Robbins’s “El Paso.” It’s a classic:
This got me thinking of great songs about cities and so I’m starting a list from different eras and different vibes... Here’s The King and “Viva Las Vegas”: https://www.google.com/search?q=viva+las+vegas&oq=viva+las+vegas&aqs=chrome.0.0i271j46i433i512j46i175i199i512j0i512l2j46i175i199i512j0i512j46i340i512j0i512j46i175i199i512.3520j0j9&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:f83e38f0,vid:ui0EgRsFVN8
And “Last Train to Clarksville” with the Monkees:
The Clash with “London Calling”: https://www.google.com/search?q=songs+about+cities&oq=songs+about+cities&aqs=chrome..69i57j0i512l9.2677j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:b533353e.d7764a32,vid:EfK-WX2pa8c,st:0
Finally, one of my favorites, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young with “Marrakesh Express”: https://www.google.com/search?q=marrakesh+express&oq=marrakesh+express&aqs=chrome.0.0i355i433i512j46i433i512j0i512l4j46i10i512j0i512j0i10i512j0i512.3156j0j9&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:eb806f2b,vid:sF4Gc8hjPdA
POETRY
There is No Frigate Like a Book
By Emily Dickenson
There is no Frigate like a Book
To take us Lands away
Nor any Coursers like a Page
Of prancing Poetry –
This Traverse may the poorest take
Without oppress of Toll –
How frugal is the Chariot
That bears the Human Soul –
Have a great weekend,
Glenn
