#721 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Friday August 4)
Good morning,
Happy birthday, Andrea!
WORDS OF WISDOM
Andrea and I attended a Bat Mitzvah the other day and was moved by the words of the girl’s mother. Here are some of those words:
“Today is about bringing you into a life of love, pursuit of wisdom and good deeds. As you know, I chose Judaism for our family prior to marrying your dad. What I love about Judaism is the focus on family, the deep sense of community and the simple rule of “Do the right thing.” I realize the extraordinary impact of the Jewish people; and now you are a trustee of this this incredible civilization that is thousands of years old.
I want to remind you of the teachings we try to pass along as parents, which are consistent with the teachings of Judaism:
honor and respect others
make good decisions
challenge the status quo
pursue justice
care for the environment
and NEVER forget the Holocaust”
A POEM, A SONG, AND A PODCAST TO START THE WEEKEND
EIGHT O’CLOCK
Sara Teasdale
Supper comes at five o’clock,
At six, the evening star,
My lover comes at eight o’clock—
But eight o’clock is far.
How could I bear my pain all day
Unless I watched to see
The clock-hands laboring to bring
Eight o’clock to me.

IF BOOKS COULD KILL
The podcast, “If Books Could Kill,” recommended by both Jake and Adam Torson. The premise of the podcast is to review (not always kindly) books that have captured the imagination or contributed to our national debate. With these two hosts, though, they try to point out dangerous ideas or incomplete or “too neat” descriptions of the world, coupled with unnecessary repetitiveness, detail and unsupported anecdote. The upshot? There is less to these “big ideas” than meets the eye. about:
Have a great weekend,
Glenn
