#66 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Tuesday June 22)
Good morning!
As I said last week, I’m keeping Tuesdays and Thursdays short.
In response to my Musing that we haven’t taught critical thinking in our schools and that confirmation bias rules the day, Dana Gordon notes, “Feelings overrule facts every time. Can’t convince someone to take vaccine with facts if they ‘feel’ it is wrong for them. Can’t convince a person to leave an abuser with the fact that they will do it again…”
The other day, I asked someone whether they were happy that they were vaccinated. He responded that no one in their family felt they “needed to.” Well, yeah, because the rest of us will protect you! Selfish, stubborn and stupid. A bad combination!
This was posted on Facebook by a friend: “Texas governor signs ‘constitutional carry bill’ into law; starting Sept. 1, Texans may carry handguns without a license or permit.” A follower immediately responded with “an armed society is a polite society.” Tell that to the parents of children killed in a school shooting. Who are these people?
But then there’s the bright side. On walks last weekend I saw many smiling faces and an unusual number of “good morning” greetings. One wonders if one positive thing coming out of pandemic is that it has made us (or at least some of us) more neighborly…
Best, Glenn
