Good morning,
MUSIC
It’s hard to identify a more beautiful (or prolific) duo than Simon & Garfunkel. Their melodies, lyrics, and harmonizing are near-perfect. It is hard to believe that, at this advanced age, Art Garfunkel has retained his angelic voice. If you have 15 minutes this weekend, give yourself a gift and listen to the Simon & Garfunkel concert, consisting of three of their most popular and moving works, at the 25th anniversary of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:
When I see Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel together, performing this hat trick of “The Sound of Silence,” “The Boxer,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” it is hard to imagine how they could ever have broken up. They each had what the other lacked. Garfunkel had a preternatural instrument in his voice. And Simon was a poet. Two different talents that melded together in near perfection.
POETRY
The lyrics of Simon & Garfunkel are poetry. Here is Bridge Over Troubled Water, worth reading as poetry:
When you're weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I'll dry them all
I'm on your side
Oh, when times get rough
And friends just can't be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
Oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh, if you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
THE WAY OF ALL FLESH
Earlier this week, I touched on the derivation of this phrase. Howard Kroll notes, in the spirit of the Academy Awards tomorrow, that Emil Jannings won the first Best Actor award for his performance in the film The Way of All Flesh. Another weird way in which the universe is interconnected…
Have a great weekend,
Glenn
Their music is part of what makes The Graduate a perfect movie. A long time ago I read a blurb about the perfectionist tendencies of Simon. Like for the song BoTW singing just one word perfectly, and adding it to the song.
