#593 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Saturday February 25)
Good morning,
Happy weekend!
MUSIC
When I shared observations about the vastness of the universe, Mark DiMaria pointed me toward the best teachers in the field. This is, of course, Monty Python teaching about the universe:
This got me to thinking about other educational satirical songs, like Tom Lehrer and “The Elements Song”:
And that got me thinking about great comedic songs about American consumerism. Most people think of “Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah” as Alan Sherman’s greatest song. But he had many others. This is one of my favorites: Alan Sherman on the “Twelve Days of Christmas”:
And finally, David Frye, impersonating Richard Nixon singing “My Way” from his album Radio Free Nixon: My Way
POETRY
Impasse
I could tell you
If I wanted to,
What makes me
What I am.
But I don't
Really want to—
And you don't
Give a damn.
—Langston Hughes
To Celia
by Ben Jonson
Drink to me, only, with thine eyes,
And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss but in the cup,
And I'll not look for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise,
Doth ask a drink divine:
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
I would not change for thine.
I sent thee, late, a rosy wreath,
Not so much honouring thee,
As giving it a hope, that there
It could not withered be.
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
And sent'st back to me:
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
Not of itself, but thee.
Have a great weekend,
Glenn
