#45 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Tuesday June 1)
“Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.”
--Ralph Waldo Emerson
Good morning!
I feel like this is the time of the “old dude…” Here are a few notable successes for old guys…
OVER FIFTY WINNING A MAJOR
Love Phil Mickelson or not, last week he became the eldest winner of one of golf’s four majors, at nearly 51 years of age.
ALBERT PUJOLS—THE MAN
Heading to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot once he retires, Albert “El Hombre” is now a Dodger. While his best playing days are behind him, his leadership and mentorship will make a difference for the boys in blue. Of course, he still has a long way to go to match the longevity of Satchell Paige, Bartolo Colon, or Hoyt Wilhelm (although they were all aging pitchers).
CYCLING ACROSS AMERICA
Parke Skelton, a friend from the “Anaheim Days,” is in the midst of a cross-country solo biking trip. He was in Oklahoma last Thursday, after 23 days of cycling, with 4 rest days, racking up 1351 miles and a 71.1 miles average per day. He’s my age. I just got off my Peloton bike and I’m beat. He’s likely to hit 60 miles today…
His pictures and commentary on his travels across America are priceless. For a wonderful travelog, catch him at: https://www.facebook.com/parke.skelton
AND RINGO’S 80
Turning 81 in July. Still going strong, still recording, still spreading “peace and love” wherever he goes.
NEW QUIZ
It’s time for a musical quiz. A great device used in songs is stuttering (as a former stutterer, let me be clear I am not teasing or disrespecting those who, like our president, stutter). An obvious example is Elton John’s “Bennie and the Jets.” Can you name others?
Have a good day,
Glenn
