#363 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Saturday May 28)
Good morning,
This Saturday starts with poetry that is sadly apt this month and moves to music that is themed to post-surgical recovery.
POETRY
America is a Gun
By Brian Bilston
England is a cup of tea.
France, a wheel of ripened brie.
Greece, a short, squat olive tree.
America is a gun.
Brazil is football on the sand.
Argentina, Maradona's hand.
Germany, an oompah band.
America is a gun.
Holland is a wooden shoe.
Hungary, a goulash stew.
Australia, a kangaroo.
America is a gun.
Japan is a thermal spring.
Scotland is a highland fling.
Oh, better to be anything
than America as a gun.
MUSIC
Many of you have asked how my recovery from surgery is going. I thought I could address each stage of the process with the titles of some of my favorite songs:
This was my first surgery and I was a tiny bit fearful of the anesthesia. When I awakened I was happy I was Stayin’ Alive:
The doctors recounted a conversation we had shortly after I awakened that I didn’t recall. Eventually, as the anesthetic wore off, I realized that I Can See Clearly Now:
The early stages of recovery are all about walking, which was good, since before surgery I was walking bent and tentatively. I wanted to Walk Like a Man (this is a great 1963 video with some classic dance moves):
First time I made it to the corner I felt like I was Walkin’ on Sunshine:
I thought I Would Walk 500 Miles:
But when I tried to walk a brisk mile after surgery, I realized I’d Gone Too Far:
And so I starting taking the advice of the doctors and friends to Take It Easy:
And, as a result, I’m Feelin’ Stronger Every Day:
Thank you, all, for your words of encouragement, ensuring I could get by With a Little Help From My Friends:
Have a great weekend,
Glenn
