#195 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Saturday November 13)
Good morning!
MUSIC
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about classical music in cartoons. But classical music also informs our popular music. Here are some well-known classical “borrowings”:
Memories, by Maroon 5 (Pachelbel’s Canon in D):
Annie’s Song, by John Denver (Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5)
This Night, by Billy Joel (Beethoven’s Pathetique)
All By Myself, by Eric Carmen (Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 2):
Play That Song, by Train (Hoagy Carmichael and Frank Loesser’s “Heart and Soul”). Okay, so it’s not really classical…but it’s a jazz classic!:
This one sounds like it comes from a Classical source:
God Only Knows, by the Beach Boys. Here’s the great, now nearly classic, BBC version with many fun cameos:
POETRY
You Fit Into Me
By Margaret Atwood
you fit into me
like a hook into an eye
a fish hook
an open eye
Our Deepest Fear
By Marianne Williamson
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness
That most frightens us.
We ask ourselves
Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small
Does not serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking
So that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine,
As children do.
We were born to make manifest
The glory of God that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us;
It’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
We unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we’re liberated from our own fear,
Our presence automatically liberates others.
Have a great weekend,
Glenn
