#141 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Saturday September 11)
Happy Weekend!
MUSIC
After Mark Greenfield’s assessment of the best dance routines in musical theatre, Howard Kroll and Diane Cairns have weighed in with some of their favorites:
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, “Barn Dance”:
Grease, “Greased Lightning”:
Chicago, “Cell Block Tango”:
. I particularly love the syncopation of this number.
La La Land, “Another Day of Sun”:
. An phenomenal sequence from a movie that “almost won” the Academy Award. An unappreciated film.
Damn Yankees, “Who’s Got the Pain”:
. Completely anachronistic and not contributing to the plot of the play but a great dance sequence…
More dance numbers in coming weeks. There are so many great ones.
POETRY
Because I Could Not Stop for Death
By Emily Dickinson
Because I could not stop for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.
We slowly drove – He knew no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –
We passed the School, where Children strove
At Recess – in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –
Or rather – He passed Us –
The Dews drew quivering and Chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –
We paused before a House that seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice – in the Ground –
Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –
Have a great day,
Glenn
PS: Let’s pause to remember the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and all that transpired as a result of those attacks. It’s hard to believe 20 years have gone by. The world looks in some ways quite different since then and, in other ways, it seems not much has changed…
