#115 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Thursday August 12)
Good morning!
A few selected comments from friends.
On the many USC debacles:
I'm not sure if what I'm about to write reflects the current situation at USC but I'll throw out an idea regardless. Perhaps this wasn't merely neglect but also encompassed hubris. University presidents and board members are highly successful. Sometimes, success breeds hubris. –Alan Rosenbach
On the death of the Republican party:
I am an admitted Recovering Republican, who is now proudly RINO or what used to be known simply as "Republican," when people seemed more decent and reasonable — willing to listen and find solutions instead of demonizing each other and accomplishing nothing except fundraising for their next campaign and deepening division.” –Mark Ferrell
On my comment that marijuana ought not be an illegal drug in sports (and, if used, shouldn’t disqualify someone):
Sha’Carri Richardson should know that if she gets caught for using any performance-enhancing or illegal in other states or countries products, you can lose the privilege of competing. She should know better. Once it becomes legalized around the globe or by the Olympics then go for it. Why risk using when you know how strict they are. –Bobby Katz
On the beauty of classical music and the gifts we receive from our parents, this remembrance touched me:
I was delighted to read you grew up listening to Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Beethoven and Brahms. As did I with my interest and focus in piano. Rach 2nd piano concerto, the Brahms B Flat Concerto, the Schumann Concerto, the Beethoven 4th / 5th Concertos and violin concertos of Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky were repeated favorites of my father. I like to say that these pieces and many others I never heard for the "first" time because I already knew them. Every inspiring note and nuance infused into my DNA. Grateful for such musical/emotional gifts from my father. –Regan Smith
On just being wrong:
Harvey Englander points out that Zev is not the youngest person elected to the L.A. City Council. It was Roz Weiner. But, hey, Zev still was (and is) a boy genius…
Have a great day,
Glenn
