#107 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Tuesday August 3)
Good morning,
YOU GOT LUCKY
I often write about little anecdotes from Sonnenberg lore. Here is a great one from Rosenbach lore, as Marc relates his brother’s conversation with a waiter at Katz’s deli:
Alan: “I’ll have a hot dog - grilled please”
Snarky Waiter: “Our hot dogs are broiled”
Alan: “Can you please grill it?”
Snarky Waiter: “No” Awkward silence then he continues. “Our hot dogs are broiled.”
Alan (strenuously): “I was just here last week and I got a grilled hot dog”
Snarky Waiter: “You got lucky”
…Love those deli waiters that act truly put-out by even the simplest of requests. Here is the classic on this subject, the diner scene from Five Easy Pieces, in which Jack Nicholson addresses the great dilemma of “no substitutions.” A plain omelet, no potatoes, no tomatoes….”:
A MORE PERFECT UNION
In response to the Musings about pursuing a “more perfect union,” Mark Schwartz shares the following:
"Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence." -Vince Lombardi
Here’s Peter Bain’s spin on the pursuit of perfection:
“One other aspect of the principled content of ‘more perfect’ that has always meant a lot to me is that, in addition to being a clearly aspirational construct, it is also one that is by definition perpetual. The founders are telling us that we will never actually achieve a perfect union and, oddly, I take comfort in that, as I believe they are exhorting us to never stop trying. And so, try we must!
Have a great day,
Glenn
