#105 Musings Beyond the Bunker (Saturday July 31)
Good morning,
This week’s music is stuff that is more recent than many favorites I’ve shared:
Brad introduced me to several great groups. “The Calamity Song,” by The Decemberists:
is one of my favorites, as is the group. If you can explain this music video to me, please do. I love the song and, although I get some of the references, it’s beyond me. But it is a great tune and one Brad and I loved to listen to. And then there’s “The Mariner’s Revenge Song”: https://www.pastemagazine.com/music/the-decemberists/the-best-11-songs-by-the-decemberists/#1-the-mariner-s-revenge-song-
Eminem. Jake has argued with me for some time that Eminem is a modern bard. I must admit that he is one of the few rap artists whom I have enjoyed and whose lyrics tell an understandable and heartfelt story. Here’s “The Real Slim Shady”:
. And “Lose Yourself”:
But of the rappers, I’m pretty lowbrow. Here’s my favorite, by Macklemore, also recommended by Jake:
“My Oh My,” a story of a boy’s love of baseball. I love this song so much.
Taylor Swift. Lauren’s “go to” favorite is a favorite of many of us. She is quite a talent, writing her own songs and not just playing the songs of others. Taylor Swift takes on special meaning, in that I attended two of her concerts with Lauren when she was back in high school. A couple of favorites: “You Belong With Me,”:
. And “Blank Space,”: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/taylor-swift-songs-ranked-rob-sheffield-201800/blank-space-2014-205262/
QUIZ FOR NEXT WEEK
Andrea and I were hiking last week on a trail that had 20 switchbacks. To keep track, we began to think of songs, sayings, and movies for each of the numbers of switchbacks. Here’s the quiz:
Name a song for each number (starting with “One is the Loneliest Number”). Hint: zero and one have the most songs. Two is pretty popular. You can only use “Jenny” and that notable Chicago song once each.
Name a book or movie for each number (e.g., Seven Days in May)
Have a great weekend,
Glenn
